Historical Outline of Town of Waldmünchen

Waldmünchen was founded by monks in 910. In 1266 the king P?emysl Otakar II.devastated the town and its neighbourhood. Since 1317 Waldmünchen has been  a part of the Leutenberg shire. In 1365 the town walls were built.

A Choice of Interesting Dates from the History of the Town
910 – monks founded the settlement „Monacum“ = Waldmünchen
around 1240 – the settlement „Monacum ante nemus Bohemorum“ became a town
1266 – the king P?emysl Otakar II.from Bohemia devastated the town and its neighbourhood
1274 – duke Heinrich and P?emysl Otakar II.signed a secret agreement with Waldmünchen against Rudolf I. Hapsburg
1317 – Landgraf Ulrich Leuchtenberg brewed beer „Weisbiersieden“
1364 – the town walls mentioned for the first time
1527 – Waldmünchen is the final point of the Prague horse court post
1615 – Thurn und Taxis created generous post support
1658 – the whole town was burned down
1839 – the town walls were torn down, the last fell the „Czech Gate“
1895 – the local railroad was opened from Waldmünchen to Cham
1945 – 30% of Waldmünchen was demolished by Americans, at the end of World War II., in April

The Iron Curtain was pulled over the border
1962 – the lake Perlsee was created on the river Schwarzach
1968 – the town received the title „State Recognized Health Resort“
1972 – the District of Waldmünchen was dissolved by the land reform

After World War II. , the amount of inhabitants rose, that is why there are mainly, so called, „houses in need“ in the borderland. Building much developed. Many building works, public sections, and new factories helped the economic boom. After the land reform in 1972, Waldmünchen became a part of the District of Cham.

Waldmünchen, an active and attractive German border town, has more than 1000 years of history. Although there were various wracks of wars and fires in the town, it always rose from the dead.
